To Describe To You My Death

“I wanted to return to Sighet to describe to you my death so that you might ready yourselves while there is little time.” (Night, chapter 1, pg. 7)

This quote shows how close to death Moishe the Beadle was. He was shot, and got back to try and warn the Jews and other people about the murders by the Nazis. But no one believed him at all. Even with proof that will never leave him. And that kind of made me fearful of their situation they will be in. I am scared for them for when the Nazis come for them and attack the Jews. He wanted to get as many people out before the Nazis terror came for them.  It kind of made me a little angry that no one believed Moishe the Beadle even when Moishe the Beadle lived it and has proof that will never leave Moishe the Beadle. How could you ignore something that big? He will have a bullet wound scar for the rest of his life, and he is telling you how he got it. How could you overlook something like that?

This quote reminds me of fear and sacrifice. Moishe the Beadle (the person who said the quote) sacrificed himself to warn the others about what was going on. For kids our age, they might sit next to that one person who is bullied and sits alone at lunch. Or talk to the girl everyone talks about, and become her friend. The kids that do that, sacrifice their friends and what popularity they have. And even though they might be scared or fearful, they stand up and do what’s right. I know that bullying and giving away important information are two VERY different things, but they both fall under the same categories. Fear and sacrifice. It’s just two different scenarios

  1. Hello Team 1! I enjoyed reading your insights and have a some questions for you:

    - Why would Hitler and his Nazi's treat the Jews this way?
    - How do you think they (the Nazis) justified it in their own minds?
    - What would be their (the Nazis) ultimate gain for treating an entire race this way?
    - What would cause one human being to treat another like this and how could it be avoided?

I look forward to your responses!

  2. Bullying is a good way to relate what you are reading and discussing to your every day life. While you may be discussing two different things, you are taking away the right message. Sometimes standing up for what is right requires some sacrifice, but the reward is worth it.
